Service Above Self: A Call for Africa to Rise Beyond Temporary Gains

Written by Prof. Mannixs E. Paul, PhD, FCFIP, FCIML, FCECFI, FFAR

Crime and wickedness are steadily increasing in our societies. The very people entrusted with protecting the masses and safeguarding the vulnerable are often using their position as a means to an end, and cruelty abounds in many communities. This is a tragedy of failed systems and a reflection of misplaced priorities. When those meant to serve become compromised, the people suffer, and justice is delayed or denied.

Life is not about chasing wealth, accumulating riches, or indulging in pleasures that fade away. True life is about service—the ability to use one’s position, resources, and influence to uplift others and contribute to a just society. History remembers not those who hoarded riches, but those who sacrificed for humanity, those who chose integrity over corruption, and service over selfishness.

Africa must wake up to this reality. For too long, temporary gains have distracted us from the larger vision of progress. Politicians, community leaders, religious leaders, and corporate entities enrich themselves while communities remain impoverished; leaders chase personal glory while citizens are left vulnerable; institutions prioritize profit over people. These fleeting benefits may fill pockets today but rob generations of stability, opportunity, and hope.

To change this course, Africa needs a reorientation—a moral awakening. We must rebuild our societies on the values of justice and service. Leaders must realize that their authority is not a privilege to exploit but a responsibility to protect. Citizens, too, must demand accountability, choosing principle over momentary comfort or material reward.

A nation’s greatness is measured not by the wealth of a few but by the well-being of its people. Africa has been blessed with immense human, natural, and cultural resources, yet we remain vulnerable because of selfishness, greed, and shortsightedness. If we continue to exchange integrity for temporary gain, our children’s future will remain at risk.

This is a defining moment. Let us choose service over greed, accountability over corruption, and integrity over compromise. In doing so, Africa will protect the vulnerable today and secure dignity, justice, and prosperity for future generations.
